Beti Bachao Beti Padho Scheme extended to 61 more districts with low child sex ratio

Government has extended the Beti Bachao Beti Padho Scheme in additional 61 districts across 11 States and Union Territories with low Child Sex Ratio. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year from Haryana in 100 districts of the country to address the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio. Addressing the function in New Delhi today, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said, out of hundred, 49 districts are doing extremely well. She said, the child sex ratio of the other districts remain stable. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme is designed to address the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio and related issues of disempowerment of women through a life cycle continuum. Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi emphasised on the need for compulsory registration of pregnant women by village panchayats to curb female foeticide. She said, for the monitoring of pregnancy cases, the Sarpanch of the village will be the Nodal person and district collectors have been asked to display the data of sex ratio in every village. <br/><br/>The Minister said, superintendent of police in every district will nominate one woman Police Volunteer to monitor security situation of women. She asked the deputy commissioners and district magistrates to adopt a proactive approach by launching creative initiatives, to change the mentality of the people towards girl child to improve child sex-ratio. She appealed to the states to achieve 100 per cent institutional deliveries and asked to map and register all the ultrasound machines to keep a check on illegal sex selection.
