In Telangana, the quality of life of girl children in Kondayipally, a tiny village in Karimnagar district has completely changed after villagers draw inspiration from the Central Government flagship programme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
”
” The villagers have set up a foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’, meaning ‘Goddess of Wealth of Our Village’ after one of them took initiative for protecting girl children and ensuring their education in their village.
”
” The girls of the village who were rejected once even in their birth are now being considered as the wealth of their family. The initiative of a youth has completely changed the mindset of the Kondayipally as well as the life of daughters of the village.
”
” AIR correspondent reports that "a few years ago, girl children in Konadayipally village of Karimnagar district in Telangana used to be treated as rejects. Even if they take birth, a pall of gloom used to engulf the family. Early marriages and sex determination was so common in the tiny village of about 300 families and nearly 1400 population.
”
” Enrolment of girls in schools was very low besides high dropouts. But setting up a Foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’ means, ‘Goddess of Wealth of Our Village’ initiated by a youth R Srinivas has changed the mindset of the entire village. Srinivas migrated to gulf countries once and came back after a few years.
”
” He was moved by the plight of girls in his village as they faced rejection by their own parents, remained uneducated and not having social respect.
”
” Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s beloved programme, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, Srinivas started the Foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’ and soon his friends joined hands for the cause.
”
” The trust soon became a boon for girl children of the village. It not only contributes 5 thousand rupees to each girl child born in the village but also partners her parents by way of contributing another 5 thousand rupees.
”
” This money will be kept in Pradhana Mantri Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana and the pass book will be handed over to her parents.
”
” The amount can be drawn only for the girl’s higher education or for her marriage. Now the villagers are literally considering the girl child being born as a boon for the family.
”
” Srinivas and his friends through the foundation, so far could help 19 girl children in the village. Karimnagar District Collector K Shashank also joined hands with the Trust and helped four girls of the village.
”
” Now the villagers are making baby steps to make their girls empowered while others want to emulate the spirit of Konadayipally.
”
