The West Bengal government has constituted nine member committee to evaluate the performance of Gram Panchayat in the State. The State Panchayat Secretary Mr. Sourabh Das is heading the Committee. Giving the information, the State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Mr. Subroto Mukherjee told AIR that the State Government has decided to reward and penalise the Panchayat, based on their performance. Mr Mukharjee informed that the government will initiate legal action against those Panchayats whose performance are not satisfactory. The State Government has already identify 135 non- performing Gram Panchayat who have failed to utilize funds mostly for project under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Act (NREGA) and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. The government also decided to clear the wages to the workers under MGNREGA on daily wages.
