The dismissal of Belgaum Municipal Corporation by the Karnataka State Government had severe repercussions in both the houses of Maharashtra Legislature on the fifth day of the on-going Winter Session in Nagpur today.Taking note of the fervent reactions of all-party colleagues, both the houses passed unanimously a strong resolution condemning the act and urging the Centre to look into the matter in order to take immediate remedial action.Meanwhile, the proceedings in both these houses were adjourned five times due to the uproar on the same topic.While moving the resolution in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Mr. Prithviraj Chavan said that the Marathi-speaking populace in the border areas was being subjected to injustice from last five decades and the decision to dismiss the BelgaumMunicipal Corporation on flimsy reasons taken by the Karnataka Government was illegal and extra-constitutional.Denouncing the oppressive act, he further said that the Union Government would be urged to direct the State to reinstate the local body and declare the border areas as the Union Territory pending the Supreme Court verdict on the vexed inter-state border issue.Mr. Chavan also called upon safeguarding the fundamental rights of the linguistic minorities and dismissal of the State Government for the anti-democratic act.Leader of Opposition Mr. Eknath Khadse expressed the support of his party to the contents of the resolution barring the part requesting initiation of action against the Karnataka Government.All other group leaders also extended full-fledged support to the cause and the similar resolutions were passed unanimously in both the houses after brief discussion.
