Beijing World Championships: Indian athletes to start campaign today

Indian athletes will begin their campaign in the World Championships in Beijing today, the second day of competitions. Shot putter Inderjeet Singh will face the severest test of his fledgling career. 27-year-old Indian tossed the iron ball to a personal best of 20.65 metre during Federation Cup at Mangalore and attained both World Championships and Rio Olympics tickets. Three 20 km race walkers Baljinder Singh, Chandan Singh and Gurmeet Singh will be the Indian faces in men's 20 km race walk.Earlier yesterday, Eritrean teenager Ghirmay Ghebreslassie claimed the first gold of the Beijing World Athletics Meet when he sprinted away for a comfortable victory in the men's marathon. 19-year-old took the lead from Lesotho's Tsepo Ramonene Mathibelle on the 36 km mark at Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest stadium. Ghebreslassie racing just his third marathon, clocked 2 hour 12 minute 27second. Tsegay took silver in 2 hours 13 minute 7 seconds and Munyo Solomon Mutai of Uganda claimd bronze clocking 2 hours 13 minutes 29 seconds. It was Eritrea's second ever world medal after Tadesse Zersenay's silver in the 10,000 metre in the 2009 world chamionships in Berlin.
