A special court in Bangladesh on Wednesday completed the process of framing criminal charges against all the 850 accused in the February 2009 BDR mutiny case. The court had begun the process of framing charges in the month of March this year with charges being framed against 743 accused in the previous hearings of the court. The charge framing process ended in the special court set up at makeshift complex in Dhaka with the final 107 of the 850 accused being indicted on various charges of arson, looting and murder. The accused were charged based on the investigation report submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department which had accused a total of 853 people which included 830 jawans of the BDR and twenty three civilians. In addition to the above charges, the accused are also being charged in another case filed under the Explosive substances act for illegal possession of arms and ammunition during the mutiny. The Judge has set August 24 as the next date for hearing when the trial process in the case will begin. Of the 853 people who were accused by the CID, 827 are currently in prison, twenty are absconding and three are dead. The February 2009 mutiny at the Pilkhana headquarters of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles which has now been renamed as Border Guards Bangladesh left 74 people dead which included 57 army officers.AIR correspondent reports, the stage is all set for trial to begin in the criminal case filed against those involved in the Februrary 2009 BDR Mutiny with process of framing charges being completed. The trial in the civil case on criminal charges is in addition to the trial of the BDR jawans involved in the mutiny by special courts set up under the BDR act by the Bangladesh government. More than three thousand jawans have already been punished following trial by these BDR special courts with a number of them being sentenced to the maximum punishment of seven years prison term under the BDR Act. However the 850 persons chargesheeted in the criminal case filed by the CID may face a maximum punishment of death penalty if found guilty by the special civil court.
