BDR Mutiny: B'desh CID charge sheet 824 people

In Bangladesh, the Criminal Investigation Department of the police have charge sheeted 824 people on various charges for being involved in the Feb 25-26, 2009 BDR mutiny in Peelkhana headquarters at Dhaka. <br/><br/>The CID submitted the chargesheet to the court of chief metropolitan magistrate on Monday evening after completing a nearly 16 month long investigation.<br/><br/>Addressing a press conference in Dhaka after submission of the report , special superintendent of the CID Mr. Abdul Kahar Akhand, who led the investigation said that out of the 824 chargesheeted 801 persons were BDR jawans and 23 were civilians which included Former BNP MP Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and a ward level Awami League leader Torab Ali. <br/><br/>The accused have been divided under several categories as plot masterminds, killers, looters, abettors and absconders and will be eventually face trial before a Speedy Trial Tribunal under an earlier government decision. The Speedy Trial Tribunal is obligated to complete the trial in 135 days. <br/><br/>According to the CID 1,285 people were named as prosecution witnesses with prominent ones being home minister Sahara Khatun, the then army chief General Moeen U Ahmed, several lawmakers including parliamentary whip Mirza Azam. Seventy four people were killed in the BDR mutiny which included fifty seven army officers deputed to the paramilitary border force.
