B’desh succeeds in unraveling genome sequence of Jute Plant

Bangladesh has succeeded in unraveling the complete genome sequence of the Jute Plant. Announcing this successful achievement by Bangladeshi researchers in Parliament today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described the sequencing of the genome as historic scientific advancement that will help the golden fibre regain its lost glory. <br/><br/>A team led by expatriate Bangladesh scientist Dr Moksudul Alam along with agriculture scientists and researchers from, Biochemistry and Biotechnology departments of Dhaka University, Jute Research Center Bangladesh, Data Soft System, an institute of Malaysia and the University of Hawaii have succeeded in decoding the genome sequence.Prime minister Sheikh Hasina said the significant achievement will help in further improving the quality of the fibre and also enhance productivity. <br/><br/>The breakthrough research is also expected to help in growing jute crops which are disease resistant and tolerant to harsh climatic conditions.
