Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman on Tuesday urged all law makers from both the ruling and opposition parties to actively participate in parliament proceedings and make a significant contribution to the country's advancement and development. Addressing the inaugural sitting for this year of the eighth session of ninth parliament, at the Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka, the President emphasized that Parliament is the focal point in the practice of democracy and the active participation of the treasury and the opposition acts as the nucleus of democratic exercise. The main opposition party the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led Khaleda Zia has been boycotting parliament proceedings for various reasons which include alleged failures of the Awami League government and harassment of its leaders. In his address the President also warned that anti liberation elements may become active any moment to foil democracy, obstruct the trial of war- criminals and embarrass the elected government by trying to create divisions and an artificial crisis of confidence in the country. He urged the people of Bangladesh to remain ever-vigilant and alert so that the democratic advancement, achieved through innumerable sacrifices is not jeopardized. He asserted that practice and flourishing of democracy are essential preconditions for prosperity and development of the nation.
