B'desh PM calls for united global efforts to combat money laundering, terrorism, militancy

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday called for united global efforts to combat the menaces of money laundering, terrorism and militancy. Addressing the opening session of the Asia Pacific Group Typology Workshop on issues related to money laundering in Dhaka today , she asserted Money laundering and terrorism-financing are multidimensional global problems that require global solutions. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh has taken steps to stop to money laundering and terrorism-financing by enacting the Money Laundering Prevention Act. She also added that a high-powered National Committee on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter- Terrorism Financing headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith has been constituted and her government is fully committed to implementing the relevant international conventions, particularly the recommendations of the global FinancialAction Task Force. The 4-day Asia Pacific Group Typologies Workshop being held in Dhaka for the first time is being hosted by the Bangladesh Bank. The Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering is an autonomous and collaborative international organisation founded in 1997 in Bangkok with more than forty member countries from the Asia and Pacific region.The four day typology workshop of the Asia Pacific group involves 200 senior government officials and experts from across the Asia Pacific region to discuss vulnerabilities, methods and trends in money laundering and terrorist financing.
