B'desh parliament approves proposal to constitute 15 member parliamentary committee to draft amendments to constitution

Bangladesh parliament today approved a proposal to constitute a 15 member parliamentary committee to draft amendments to the country’s constitution. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina moved the proposal to set up the special committee in Parliament today which was approved unanimously by voice vote in the house which is currently being boycotted by the opposition members including the main opposition party the BNP. Moving the proposal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the special committee is being set up following the Supreme Court upholding the High Court’s verdict declaring the fifth amendment illegal and unconstitutional. The all party committee will be headed by the Deputy Leader of the House, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury and co-chaired by the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law Mr.Suranjit Sengupta. The move to amend the constitution comes a few months after the Supreme Court had upheld the High Court verdict in February this year declaring the Fifth amendment as unconstitutional and also declared the regimes of Khandaker Mushtaque Ahmed, Abu Sada’t Mohammad Sayem, and Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman between August 15, 1975 and April 9, 1979 as illegal. Secretary General of the main opposition party BNP, Mr.Khandekar Delawar Hossain has however described the setting up of the committee as unconstitutional and against the rules of procedure.
