The Bangladesh Parliament has passed the Border Guard Bangladesh Bill-2010 aimed at revamping the Bangladesh Rifles which will now be renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh. The bill that was passed on Wednesday evening by voice vote includes stringent punishment provisions including that of Life imprisonment and death penalty for grave offences like murder and mutiny. The Border Guard Bangladesh Bill was initiated by the government following the BDR mutiny in February 2009 in which seventy persons including 57 army personnel were killed. The bill also provides for restructuring of the organization of the Border Force to increase the administrative efficiency of the force.
