B'desh Ministry of Fisheries & Livestock withdraws red alert issued against anthrax

The Bangladesh Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has withdrawn the red alert issued against anthrax in the month of September this year.Briefing reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas said that the government has withdrawn the alert as steps taken by the government has helped in controlling the spread of anthrax and there has been no information of any fresh outbreak in the last few weeks.AIR correspondent reports, with the Bangladesh government’ s efforts to control the spread of anthrax helping in stopping any new cases of cattle and human infections since September 18th , the red alert against anthrax in the country has been withdrawn nearly one month after it was issued. According to the livestock ministry 104 cattle died due to anthrax nfection during the period of July to September this year. In addition to this more than 500 people were reported to be affected by cutaneous anthrax infections after the anthrax outbreak was reported in Sirajganj. Following the outbreak more than 2.5 million domestic animals were vaccinated against anthrax in the affected districts which has helped in stopping the spread of the disease. The anthrax outbreak had also snowballed into a controversy with the country’s meat traders alleging that the poultry framers were deliberately trying to spread panic and benefit from it. The withdrawal of the red alert will bring relief to the meat traders in Bangladesh whose business was severely affected due to the outbreak.
