Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have decided to work towards finalizing an agreement on investment promotion and protection soon. Addressing a joint press conference with the Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni in Dhaka on the occasion of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse’s visit to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Peiris said the next meeting of the Joint Economic Commission will be held in Dhaka shortly and it would take up the issues related to the Agreement on Investment Promotion and Protection. He said the two sides also discussed political cooperation to enable exchange of information about terrorist activities and terrorist financing so that terrorism could not raise its ugly head in the future in both the countries. In a joint statement issued on the occasion of the Sri Lankan President’s visit the two sides said they have decided to review the existing Air Services Agreement to facilitate transport of air cargo. Sri Lanka has also requested the Bangladesh side to consider resuming the feeder shipping service for Chittagong and Mongla Ports via Colombo and also invited a team from Bangladesh to visit the newly developed Hambantota deep sea Port and the upgraded facilities at the Colombo Port. The two countries also plan to ask the tour operators from both countries to draw up special packages for people interested in visiting Buddhist religious sites. The Sri Lankan President will leave Dhaka Wednesday on the conclusion of his first three day state visit to Bangladesh.
