B’desh HC quashes proceedings in three corruption cases against Hasina

In Bangladesh, the High Court today quashed the proceedings in three corruption cases related to the Bangabandhu Novo Theatre filed against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The High court gave its verdict on three separate writ petitions filed by Sheikh Hasina challenging the Anti Corruption Commission Chief’s approval to investigate the cases.

The court said that the anti-Corruption Commission chairman's approval for investigating into the cases was illegal as he alone had taken the decision. The court observed that the ACC functions as a composite body and the full commission should take any decision and not the chairman alone. The court also declared the cases which were filed during the regime of BNP-led four party alliance government as illegal. Three cases were filed on March 27, 2002 at the Tejgaon police station accusing Sheikh Hasina and some of her cabinet members on charges of corruption and irregularities in the novo theatre project.
