In Bangladesh, the High Court today dismissed a corruption case filed in 2001 against Prime minister Sheikh Hasina involving the purchase of MiG-29 warplanes during her previous tenure. The two judge bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Borhanuddin gave the ruling on a petition filed by Sheikh Hasina in 2008 challenging the case proceedings against her. The case was filed by the earlier Bureau of Anti- Corruption accusing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others of causing financial losses of $129 million to the state in the purchase of eight Russian MiG-29 fighter planes during her previous term as Prime minister from 1996-2001. The High Court ruled that there was no evidence of irregularities in the purchase of the warplanes and no legal validity to the case against the Prime minister. Sheikh Hasina's Counsel Fazle Noor Taposh told reporters that the case was filed to belittle her and the court ruled that nobody should file such cases with ulterior motives.
