In Bangladesh, the High Court today dismissed a corruption case filed in 2001 against Prime minister Sheikh Hasina involving the purchase of MiG-29 warplanes during her previous tenure. The two judge bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Borhanuddin gave the ruling on a petition filed by Sheikh Hasina in 2008 challenging the case proceedings against her. The case was filed by the earlier Bureau of Anti- Corruption accusing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others of causing financial losses of $129 million to the state in the purchase of eight Russian MiG-29 fighter planes during her previous term as Prime minister from 1996-2001. The High Court ruled that there was no evidence of irregularities in the purchase of the warplanes and no legal validity to the case against the Prime minister. Sheikh Hasina's Counsel Fazle Noor Taposh told reporters that the case was filed to belittle her and the court ruled that nobody should file such cases with ulterior motives.AIR correspondent C. Senthil Rajan reports from Dhaka that the case of corruption in the purchase of MIG 29 fighter planes against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was filed by the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption in 2001 and charges were framed during the period of the previous caretaker government. Though Sheikh Hasina obtained a stay on the case proceedings in 2008, today’s ruling by the High Court gives her complete relief in the case. The High court has made it clear in its verdict that the case was filed under the influence of the then BNP-led government and has no legal validity. Earlier last week, the same High Court bench had quashed another three corruption cases against Sheikh Hasina and her former cabinet ministers which had charged them with financial irregularities in the construction of the Bangabandhu Novo Theatre during her previous tenure.
