B'desh green & civil society activists march against India JV Thermal plant

In Bangladesh, the National Committee on Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, has started a 5-day Dhaka-Sunderbans March, protesting against the Ramphal Thermal Power Plant. The protestors consisting of environmentalists and civil society groups, are concerned that the coal-based thermal power plant coming up at a site 14 kms from the Sunderbans would affect the world's largest mangroove forest. The rally began this morning at the National Press Club in Dhaka and will culminate at Ramphal on 28th September after covering Manikganj, Faridpur, Jessore and Khulna. Bangladesh Power Development Board and the National Thermal Power Corporation of India signed a deal April 20 for setting up the 1320 megawat power plant at an estimated cost of 2 billion US dollars.
