B'desh garment worker protest in Dhaka for minimum wages turns violent

Agitating readymade garment workers staged protests in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka today demanding 8000 takas minimum monthly wages. Paying no heed to calls for joining work, thousands of workers demonstrated in Kuril area of the capital today, disrupting vehicular traffic, hurling stones, and forcing the police into action.Readymade garment workers have been staging violent protests for the last three days in various parts of the country including Gazipur, Savar, Narayanganj, but were expected to return to work today after a meeting with representatives of workers and factory owners. Following the setting up of a Wage Board in May for fixing the minimum wage, the labour unions and the BGMEA representing the factory owners have been deadlocked over the minimum wage. While workers are demanding 8000 takas monthly wage, BGMEA is offering 3600 takas. Over 4 million workers are engaged in the readymade garment factories which bring over 20 billion US dollars export earnings to Bangladesh.
