In Bangladesh, garment workers at Savar clashed with the police today injuring around 100 more people including pedestrians. The unrest led management to close down 25 more factories today, after work in 150 units was suspended yesterday in the Ashulia industrial belt due to clashes which injured over 50 people. Garment factory workers have been demonstrating and clashing with the police for last few days in Sawar, Gazipur and Ashulia asking for enhanced wages leading to closure of factories in Gazipur, Fatulla and Kanchpur. Meanwhile, Labour Unions said thair agitation will continue till their demand for 8114 takas minimum wage is met.Over 4000 workers, 80% of whom are women, are engaged in the garment factory sector which brings around 22 billion US $ in foreign currency to the country. Unsafe buildings and poor working conditions prevail in this sector Over 1100 workers had lost their lives April this year in the Rana Plaza building collapse.
