Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni today said that the idea of setting up SAARC Police on the lines of the international police organization Interpol is being examined by SAARC member states. <br/><br/>Addressing a seminar on the outcome of the 16th SAARC summit in Dhaka today, she said the Home Ministers of all SAARC member states will be meeting shortly to examine ways and means to strengthen cooperation to combat terrorism and transnational crime. <br/><br/>She asserted that a better understanding between member states on matters related to security would help in bridging the trust gap and enable better implementation of programmes and projects under SAARC. <br/><br/>She said the SAARC Terrorism Offences Monitoring Desk and SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk which have been set up in Colombo will aid in curbing transnational crimes in the region. She also stressed on the need for implementation of SAARC Projects through regionally empowered entities with necessary regional oversight and evaluation mechanisms. <br/><br/>Welcoming the decision to establish of a SAARC Energy Ring, she said projects such as region-wide power exchange and grid connectivity, a regional LNG terminal and a regional refinery which are currently being examined will allow member states to reduce costs by taking advantage of economy of scale.
