B'desh ferry with 100 on board capsizes; several feared dead

In Bangladesh, a ferry carrying around 100 people has capsized in a river outside the capital Dhaka. A number of people were said to be unaccounted for after the boat went down in the Meghna River today. District administrator Saifuddin Badal told the AFP news agency that about 25 people were believed to have swum to the shore. The boat, named MV Sarosh, was carrying passengers from the capital Dhaka to the southeastern district of Chandpur. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident but Bangladesh has a history of boating disasters as a result of lax safety standards and frequent overloading of vessels.
