B'desh faces the brunt of a depression in the Bay of Bengal

Bangladesh is facing the brunt of a depression in the Bay of Bengal with huge tidal surges in the coastal districts and heavy rain in different parts of the country. The Met Department has warned of tidal surges of 5-7 feet above normal under the influence of the depression in the coastal districts areas of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their off shore island and chars. The coastal districts of Bangladesh are already been experiencing heavy tidal surges with more than 30 villages reportedly having been inundated forcing several thousand people to leave their homes. According to a special weather bulletin issued by department the depression lay centred at about 955 Kms Southwest of Chittagong port, 915 KMS Southwest of Cox’s bazaar port and 780 Kms Southwest of Mongla port at 3.pm. this afternoon. The bulletin also forecasts that the depression is likely to intensify further and move in a North-Northwesterly direction. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazaar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three. Squally weather with wind speeds of 44 kilometres per hour have also been predicted while fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to not to go out to the sea. Inland water transport also had to be suspended in several areas due to the bad weather.
