B'desh Ex-MoS Home sent to police remand in arms haul case

In Bangladesh, Former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar was sent to five days police remand today in the Chittagong ten-truck arms haul case of 2004 during the tenure of the BNP government.Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman issued the remand order as investigation officer of the case ASP Mohammad Moniruzzaman produced Babar before the court. While the investigation officer made a plea for 10 days’ remand, the court issued the order for only five days. After the court proceedings, the former state minister was taken to Chittagong jail where he will be interrogated under police custody.Earlier on October 3, the court had directed the police to show him arrested in this case, in response to an appeal filed by CID, the investigating agency of the case. Mr. Babar is also facing trial in several other cases.AIR correspondent C Senthil Rajan reports from Dhaka that the Chittagong arms haul case had created a stir in the country when ten truckloads of weapons consignment reportedly meant to be delivered to the insurgent group ULFA were seized in 2004. The seized weapons reportedly included over 27,000 grenades, 150 rocket launchers, over 11 lakh ammunition and 1,100 sub machine guns which were set to be delivered in trucks destined for the ULFA camps. The investigation agency informed the court that there is evidence to indicate the involvement of the Former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in the case. The five day police remand will help the investigators to quiz the former minister for more information to unveil the conspiracy behind one of the most sensational cases in Bangladesh.
