The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the appeals of the five men convicted of killing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in a landmark verdict. The five convicts are Syed Faruk Rahman, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan.Justice Mohammed Tofazzal Islam gave the historic judgement upholding the verdict of the third High Court judge made in 2001. He said the convicts were not in active service during the killings and that there was no legal error by holding their trial under civil law instead of army law. The judge said it was not a mutiny, but a conspiracy to kill Bangabandhu. The five killers will go to the gallows, unless the president grants them clemency. They, however, can seek to have the verdict reviewed by the Appellate Division. Barrister Taposh who was one of the advocates in the prosecution team and also the son of the nephew of Sheikh Mujibir Rehaman who was killed in the incident said it is a historic day for the people of Bangladesh. Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with most of his family members, including his 10-year old son Russel on August 15, 1975 in a predawn upraisal that had also toppled the country's first government.
