The Bangladesh cabinet today approved an amendment to the BDR act to speed up the trial of the cases related to the February 2009 mutiny of the Bangladesh Rifles personnel. <br/><br/>Briefing reporters today in Dhaka, after the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the Prime minister’s Press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said according to the current law, the BDR director general is to head the special courts which have been set up to conduct the trial and it is time consuming for the DG to conduct all the special courts. He said the amendment would allow the BDR chief to appoint director-level officers to head the special courts which will help in speeding up the trial process. <br/><br/>The government has formed six special courts under the BDR act to conduct the trial of nearly 3,500 border guards who have been accused of being involved in the February mutiny at the Peelkhana headquarters which left 74 people killed including 57 army officers.
