B’desh-Bhutan sign MoU for cooperation in health sector

Bangladesh and Bhutan on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in health sector and an agreement on cultural exchange. The two agreements were signed following talks between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and visiting Bhutan Prime Minister Jigme. Y. Thinley in Dhaka on Tuesday.Briefing reporters about the agreements, the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Media Adviser Abul Kalam Azad said that under the MOU on co-operation in Health sector doctors from Bangladesh will be employed in Bhutan. Apart from these two agreements, the Bhutan Prime minister has also assured Bangladesh of extending necessary co-operation in the hydro-power sector.Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked her Bhutanese counterpart to consider Bangladesh in future hydro power projects either as an investment partner or on an equity sharing basis or as a direct purchaser of power. With Bangladesh being a downstream country she also urged Bhutan to strengthen cooperation in protecting the environment and eco-system till an institutional mechanism is established for joint water resource management. She also invited Bhutan to use the ports of Mongla and Chittagong and said that a transit agreement between Bangladesh and Bhutan is now being reworked to meet the new demands of connectivity.
