B'desh appellate division judge to give date for hearing Bangabandhu case

In Bangladesh, an Appellate Division chamber judge is expected to give a date on Wednesday for hearing the review petitions of Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin who have been sentenced to death for the 1975 killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Both Huda and Mohiuddin filed petitions on Sunday for review of the Supreme Court judgment that upheld death sentence of the five convicts. Huda, AKM Mohiuddin and another convict Mohiuddin Ahmed have also submitted clemency petitions to the President while Syed Faruque Rahman and Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan have not sought clemency yet but are likely to file review petitions with the Supreme Court. Chief state counsel Ansiul Haque told reporters in Dhaka that a plea was filed on behalf of the state to the Supreme Court for quick hearing of the review petitions.

The Supreme Court, in a historic judgment had rejected the appeals of the five convicted killers on Nov 19 last year, upholding the High Court's death penalties in the case. Earlier in the first week of January, a Dhaka district and sessions judge issued death warrants for all the five to Dhaka Central Jail, where the convicted killers are being held.
