The government has mooted a media watchdog to take care of the malicious contents. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi today, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said that a Broadcasting Complaints Council, BCC headed by a retired Supreme Court judge or ex-chief justice of a high court, would be formed for self-regulation of the media. The Minister said, her ministry has worked out a two tier mechanism, one for the individual channels in tandem with the cable regulatory Act and another to put in place a council. Giving details, Mrs. Soni said that besides the chairman, the Council will have 12 other members comprising four representatives of the broadcasters, an equal number from civil society and one each from the National Council for Women, the National Council for Protection of Children Rights, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and a single representative of the national commission of the affected party.The Minister said she has written to the Prime Minister expressing her intention to rope in Cabinet colleagues, Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram and Law Minister Mr. Veerappa Moily, to gather feedback on the changes over the media rules. The Minister said following this exercise the proposal will be put before the Cabinet for approval. Insisting that self regulation is the best method for managing the content and taking care of the sensitivities of the audience, the Minister said that under the proposal the affected party could directly make compaints to the Council.The Minister also said that adequate care will be taken of the regional channels.
