Exit polls in Romania's Presidential election suggest that President Traian Basescu is narrowly ahead of his Social Democrat challenger Mircea Geoana. He got 33-34% of the vote, the polls said, well short of the 50% needed to win outright. Social Democrat Mircea Geoana was second with 31-32%.
The vote is expected to end a political crisis since the fall of Prime Minister Emil Boc's centre-right government in October. Since then Romania has been in the hands of a caretaker government.
The IMF has delayed the payment of part of its bail-out loan to the Eastern European country because of its current lack of effective government.
