Bar pol parties from entry into b'casting space: TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India,TRAI has suggested barring political parties from entering into broadcasting space in a bid to check influence on news and views. It recommended several restrictions on the corporate houses in this regard as well. Releasing recommendations on 'Issues Relating to Media Ownership' yesterday, TRAI Chairman Rahul Khullar said, corporate ownership has to be seen as how much independence is enjoyed by the editorial team. He said one problem with media corporate ownership is the business of advertorials. The regulator recommended that in case of advertorials, a clear disclaimer should be mandated, to be printed in bold letters, stating that the succeeding content has been paid for. TRAI suggested that entities including political and religious bodies, central and state government ministries and government funded entities be barred from entry into broadcasting and TV channel distribution sectors. It has suggested enactment of a new legislation through an executive decision for it.
