The Bangladesh Supreme Court today adjourned for two weeks the hearing on two appeal petitions filed by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus. Yunus is seeking a stay against the High Court verdict upholding the Bangladesh Bank’s order to remove him from the office of managing director of Grameen Bank. The six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque adjourned the hearing in order to examine the March 8th High Court verdict which rejected Dr Yunus ‘s writ petitions challenging the legality of the Bangladesh Bankorder. Dr.Yunus had filed an appeal petition with the Supreme Court on March 9th against the High Court verdict. Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain who briefly heard the arguments from both sides sent the appeal petitions to the full bench of the Supreme Court for a full-fledged hearing which was scheduled for today. Earlier in the month, the Bangladesh bank had sent a letter to Grameen Bank ordering the removal of 70 year old Dr .Muhammad Yunus from his post in Grameen Bank on the ground that he had crossed the age limit of sixty years stipulated by law for directors of a bank. The Central Bank had also asserted that the Grameen Bank board had not got its approval to appoint Dr.Yunus as Managing Director for an indefinite period.
