Bangladesh to sign power Purchase Agreement with India

Bangladesh will soon sign a power Purchase Agreement with India by this month to import 250 MW power by March 2013. This was decided at the meeting of the Joint steering committee on power led by the Power Secretaries of the two countries. Addressing a joint press conference at the end of the meeting, Bangladesh’s Power division Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that both the countries have agreed to sign the deal by this month and implement the project within next two years to facilitate import of power by the end of 2012 or March 2013. India’s Power Secretary P. Umashankar reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to assist Bangladesh in the development of the power sector. The two sides have also decided to work towards finalizing a Joint Venture Agreement by June to form a company to set up and run a 1320 MW power plant in Bangladesh.The India Bangladesh Joint Steering committee on power reviewed the progress of the interconnecting Grid Project which will facilitate power transmission between the two countries. The project aims to set up a 125 kilometre double circuit transmission line of 400 kilovolts from Baharampur in India to Bheramara in Bangladesh. The inter-grid connection will facilitate the transmission of power from India to Bangladesh by 2012. India had agreed to provide 250 Megawatt of power to Bangladesh during the visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India last year.
