The Bangladesh government has ordered the release of one thousand prisoners who are serving life terms in different prisons in the country. The Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Ashraful Islam told All India Radio Special Correspondent in Dhaka that he received the Home Ministry’s order to release the prisoners last evening and it is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that one thousand prisoners will be released at a time. Mr. Islam said that the prisoners being released as per a Jail code rule which permits the release of prisoners who have completed twenty years of their thirty year life prison term and have a good record of conduct during their jail term. The prisoners will be released on Thursday from the 68 jails in the country with the maximum number of seventy five prisoners set to be released from the Dhaka Central Jail. The release of such a large number of prisoners is happening after a special directive of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Most of the prisoners being released are quite old and the move has brought cheers to the relatives and family members of the prisoners who are being released in the holy month of Ramadan
