Bangladesh: Thousands of shops gutted, 6 injured in market fire in Dhaka

A devastating fire gutted thousands of shops in the Bangabazar market of Dhaka on Tuesday. The fire started in the morning and continued to blaze for over six hours destroying several thousand shops in the market. State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Md Enamur Rahman said 5,000 small traders were affected by the fire.
''
''At least 12 people, including four firefighters were injured in the incident. Six of the injured are in critical condition, reports the official news agency BSS. The fire destroyed most of the shops in the market.
''
''The Bangabazar market is mainly a cloth market popular among the low income people and students for its affordable cloth items. Most of the shops in the market had tin-roof or similar temporary material making it highly prone to fire hazards. Earlier also there were fire incidents in the market but this is the biggest ever such incident at the Banhabazar market.
''
''The government had declared it unsafe in 2019 asking the occupants to move but the dense market area continued to operate till now due to the opposition of the shop owners, said Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
''
''Close to 50 units of the Fire Brigade, Border Guard Bangladesh, police, Rapid Action Battalion and local people struggle for more than 6 hours to bring the fire under control. Rescue teams of army, air force and navy were also deployed to bring the massive blaze under control, said ISPR in a press release.
''
''The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has constituted an eight-member committee to look into the causes of the devastating fire that destroyed several thousand shops in the area. Another enquiry committee has been set up by the Fire Services division to find out the cause of the incident.
