Bangladesh: Ships to go directly to Europe from Chattogram port with RMG products

Bangladeshi ships with Ready-Made Garments (RMG) will go directly from the Chattogram port to Europe without transshipment anywhere. The direct shipping will start from Feb. 6 on a pilot basis for Ravenna port in Italy. The ships will go twice a month. Other buyers from European countries will take the goods to their respective countries from Italy.
''
''Confirming the pilot project of direct shipping of RMG products to Europe from the Chattogram port, Shipping Minister Khalid Mahmud said that it will greatly benefit the RMG sector in Bangladesh. It will be a step in realizing the vision of a prosperous Bangladesh as envisaged by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
''
''Earlier, the shipment to Europe took almost 40 days which will now be reduced to 16 days. The cost of transportation will also come down by 40 percent, said the Port Chairman Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan, reports DW Bangla.
''
''Currently, the RMG items from Bangladesh are sent to Europe through the transshipment route using the ports at Colombo in Sri Lanka, Klang in Malaysia, or Singapore. The RMG product is sent further to Europe from these ports using the main ship. Now, the ships will go directly to Europe. The ships will also return to Chattogram with empty containers. Once the new system is implemented fully, the overall time of the journey and cost of transportation will be reduced substantially.
''
''A ship from Italy left 1050 containers at Chattogram port on Dec 23 last year. It will again arrive on Feb 4 with 1000 empty containers. The first ship with filled-up containers will leave on Feb. 6. Later the number of ships going directly to Europe is expected to rise which will benefit the RMG sector greatly.
