Bangladesh has sought the support of West Bengal Government to ink Teesta water sharing agreement. The Bangladesh Foreign Minister Deepu Moni met the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee in Kolkata on Wednesday evening and sought her support in this regard.
Later addressing a joint press conference, Ms. Mamta Banerjee said that her government has constituted an Expert Committee on river to look into the whole issue and will take a final view after the Committee submits its report. Ms Banerjee clarified that they will be happy if Bangladesh gets water from Teesta river but the problems of West Bengal also need to be addressed.
AIR Kolkata Correspondent reports that the Teesta accord could not be signed during the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's Dhaka visit in September due to last minute objection raised by the West Bengal Chief Minister. Ms Banerjee had even pulled out of the Indian delegation as a protest.
