Bangladesh SC upholds Jamaat leader Mollah's death penalty

In Bangladesh, the full bench of the appellate division of the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the review petition against the death sentence of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah, clearing the way for the execution.

The apex court said that as per the constitution, review petition is not admissible to a war crimes convict.

Mollah's execution was halted at the last moment on Tuesday night by a Supreme Court Chamber Judge on a petition that proper procedure was not followed.

The Jamaat leader was given death sentence September 17 by the Appellate Division of Supreme Court for genocide during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, reversing the life sentence given by the International Crimes Tribunal on February 5.

Meanwhile, Jamaat activists continue the violence and arson attacks protesting against the impending execution, amidst the BNP-led Opposition enforced nationwide transport blockade, demanding postponing elections, entered 6th day on Thursday.
