Bangladesh SC adjourns hearing on a petition filed by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus

The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on a petition filed by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus seeking a stay against the High Court verdict upholding the Bangladesh Bank’s order to remove him from the office of Managing Director of Grameen Bank.The Supreme Court full bench will now take up the case on April 4th. Dr.Yunus had filed an appeal petition with the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict which upheld the Bangladesh Bank’s decision to remove him from Grameen Bank. The petition was referred to the full bench of the apex court. Earlier in the month, the Bangladesh bank had sent a letter to Grameen Bank ordering the removal of 70 year old Dr.Muhammad Yunus from his post in Grameen Bank on the ground that he had crossed the age limit of sixty years stipulated by law for directors of a bank. The Central Bank had also asserted that the Grameen Bank board had not got its approval to appoint Dr.Yunus as Managing Director for an indefinite period. The United States Government has been urging the Bangladesh government to reach a compromise solution with Dr.Yunus.
