Bangladesh has made all preparations to write to the United Nations seeking recognition of March 25 as International Genocide Day. This was declared by the Minister for Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Huq yesterday at a press conference in the capital Dhaka.<br/><br/>The Minister said on March 11, the Bangladesh Parliament, Jatiya Sangsad, passed a resolution to observe March 25th as Genocide Day, and the cabinet on March 20th approved the resolution, completing all formalities to recognize the brutal genocide committed on this day in 1971. On the night of March 25, Pakistan army unleashed its war machine on the population of then East Pakistan killing around 50,000 people. The military operations codenamed 'Operation Searchlight' stormed the dormitaries of Dhaka University killing students and teachers besides mass killings at Kamalapur railway station, Sadarghat launch terminal, etc. <br/><br/>Mozammel Huq said, currently Dec 9 is observed as international Genocide Day but the day does not bear any historical significance. It is just because the Genocide Convention was adopted by the UN on 9th December 1948 that Dec 9 has got recognised as International Genocide Day since 2015. <br/><br/>Bangladesh strongly feels that since March 25 is the only incident in the world when massive killings were done without any declaration of war that it deserves to be observed as International Genocide Day instead of December 9.
