<span style="color: #222222;">Bangladesh has lost a total of 16,400 kilometres of waterways due to negligence and lack of supervision. Of a total of 24,000 kilometres of river routes before 1960, the country was left with just about 6,000 kilometres of water ways. <br />''<br />''The government has undertaken dredging of rivers to increase the river routes which has now gone up to 7600 kilometres. State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said in Parliament on Saturday that the government has planned to install CCTV cameras in all major river ports of the country to ensure the security of waterway passengers. <br />''<br />''Government of Bangladesh is also taking steps like setting up of a river commission to protect rivers from pollution and save them from illegal occupiers. Environmental organisations of Bangladesh however blame government agencies for corruption and negligence of rivers that has led to loss of waterways in the country.</span><br />
