Bangladesh: IMF revises growth projections downwards

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has made a downward revision in the growth projection for Bangladesh for the current fiscal year owing to the conflict in Ukraine which has led to significant slowdown in the world economy in 2022. In its latest Global Economic Outlook published on Tuesday, the IMF projects that Bangladesh's GDP in the current fiscal 2022 will grow at 6.4 percent, down from 6.6 percent projected in its last review in January.
''
'' The growth rate projection for the next fiscal 2023 has also been revised downwards to 6.7 percent from the earlier projection of 7.1 percent.
''
'' The IMF report projects the inflation in Bangladesh to be 6.4 percent for fiscal 2022 which is likely to moderate to 5.9 percent in the next fiscal 2023. The current account deficit for fiscal 2022 for Bangladesh is estimated to be 3.2 percent which is likely to improve to 2.9 percent in the next fiscal 2023.
''
'' Global growth is also projected to slow from an estimated 6.1 percent in 2021 to 3.6 percent in 2022 and 2023. Beyond 2023, global growth is forecast to decline to about 3.3 percent over the medium term. The inflation projection for the emerging markets has been pegged at 8.7 percent which is 2.8 percent higher than the projections in January due to war-induced commodity price increases globally.
''
'' However, the government of Bangladesh has projected a growth rate of 7.2 percent for the current fiscal and 7.5 percent for the fiscal year 2023.
