Bangladesh Home Ministry forms probe body to investigate death of undertrial writer under Digital Security Act

<span style="color: #222222;">The Home Ministry of Bangladesh has formed a five-member probe committee to investigate the death of the undertrial writer Mushtaq Ahmed in Gazipur jail. Additional Secretary in the Security Services Division of the Ministry Tatun Kanti Shikder will be its convenor. The Gazipur district administration has also formed a panel to probe the death of Mushtaq Ahmed.<br />'' <br />'' Responding to the journalists' question about the death of Mushtaq Ahmed, during a press conference on Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that nobody's death was desirable at all but there is nothing to do if anyone dies being sick in jail. On the issue of Digital Security Act (DSA), Prime Minister Hasina said that the government was under obligation to ensure digital security as it is creating a digital Bangladesh with ICT facilities at the grassroots level.<br />'' <br />'' The Spokesperson of the US department of state tweeted on Saturday that the US is concerned about the death of Bangladeshi writer Mushtaq Ahmed while detained under the DSA. He called upon the Bangladesh government to conduct a transparent investigation and for all countries to uphold the right of freedom of expression.<br />'' <br />'' Earlier, the heads of mission of 13 OECD countries including US, UK, EU among others issued a joint statement expressing concern over the provisions and implementation of DSA. The signatories called upon the government to conduct a swift, transparent and independent enquiry into the full circumstances of the death of Mushtaq Ahmed.<br />'' <br />'' Meanwhile, students protested for the second consecutive day in Dhaka on Saturday against the incident. Organisations working for freedom of expression like PEN International Bangladesh, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Forum for Freedom of Expression in Bangladesh (FExB) among others demanded that DSA should be revoked.  <br />'' <br />'' The 53-year-old writer Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested in May last year under the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA) on the charges of spreading rumours and carrying out anti-government activities on Facebook. He was lodged in Kashimpur jail where he died on Thursday.</span><br />''
