The Bangladesh government has decided to set up a committee to probe the activities and the recent reports of alleged irregularities in funds being managed by the Grameen Bank led by Nobel Laureate Mohammed Yunus. Talking to reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka today, Finance minister A.M.A. Muhith said that a committee will be formed to assess the Grameen Bank's activities and reports received from the Norwegian agency and the government will disclose the findings to the public. The Bangladesh government’s move comes against the backdrop of a report in a Norwegian Documentary film that Prof. Yunus had allegedly diverted funds of Grameen Bank to another sister organization Grameen Kalyan. The Norwegian government however later dismissed the allegations based on a report submitted by the country’s aid agency NORAD and asserted that Grameen Bank was not involved in any corrupt practices.Meanwhile the Grameen Bank on Thursday dismissed media reports in some Bengali dailies of the country that Prof Muhammad Yunus' had resigned from the organisation. In a statement issued today the Bank said that the Nobel Laureate is still serving as managing director on the Grameen Bank board.
