Bangladesh confers 'Swadhinata Sammanona’ to Indira Gandhi

Bangladesh has decided to confer the country’s highest honour ‘The Bangladesh Swadhinata Sammanona’ on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her outstanding contribution to Bangladesh’s war of liberation in 1971. The decision to honour Indira Gandhi with the award was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka on Tuesday. Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said, the Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman will formally hand over the award and citation honouring Indira Gandhi to her daughter-in-law and Congress President Sonia Gandhi at Bangabhavan on the 25th of this month. AIR correspondent reports that the UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit Dhaka to participate as Chief Guest in an international conference on Autism on 25th July at the invitation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
