The Management Committee of the National Press Club of Bangladesh Jatiya Press Club has criticised the recent move of the Bank of Bangladesh seeking bank details of the office bearers of journalist's association in the country. The National Press Club of Bangladesh in a statement issued on Wednesday said that it does not oppose seeking account details of any individual in connection with a specific case. However, seeking details of the top office bearers of any professional organisation seems motivated. It tarnishes the image of the journalist community and brings an organisation like National Press Club in disrepute. It is an unprecedented act, said the statement. Strongly opposing the move, it demanded the withdrawal of the order of the Bank.
''
''Earlier, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank had sought bank details of several top office bearers of four major journalists associations of the country namely the National Press Club, Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ), Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). It asked all the banks to send financial information including bank statements of the journalists.
''
''The list included the names of senior journalists like the President of National Press Club Farida Yasmin, General Secretary Ilyas Khan, DUJ President Kader Goni Chowdhury and BFUJ President M. Abdullah among others.
''
''The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) is the central agency of the Bank of Bangladesh responsible for analysing money laundering and suspicious transactions received from reporting agencies and other sources.
