Bandh observed in Karnataka disrupts normal life

The incidents of torching the buses, pelting stones and forceful closure of shops marked the Karnataka bandh called by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party yesterday. The bandh was called to protest Governor H.R. Bhardwaj's sanction for Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's prosecution on corruption charges. The Bangalore city police commissioner imposed prohibitory orders in Bangalore for two days. The Director General of Police office say that over 500 persons were arrested under preventive custody and released later. Meanwhile two private complaints were filed yesterday in a city civil court in Bangalore against Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for his prosecution in alleged land scams. The matter would come up before Additional City Civil Judge C Hipparagi tomorrow. The ruling BJP in Karnataka held a demonstration demanding recall of Governor H R Bhardwaj for sanctioning prosecution of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and accused the opposition Congress and JDS of indulging in ''backdoor politics''. Main opposition Congress lashed out at the BJP for sponsoring the state-wide bandh. The Opposition leader Siddaramaiah alleged that in several places BJP workers created trouble and blocked roads defying prohibitory orders imposed by police. He further added that the BJP demonstrated its “fascist” nature and the government should be dismissed. Assailing the BJP for sponsoring Karnataka bandh, JD-S said it would file a contempt petition for violating the Supreme Court's order banning shut-downs. The party Chief H D Deve Gowda said that the bandh called by the ruling BJP went against the apex court order.
