The Supreme Court today refused to interfere with a Bombay High Court order which had stayed the ban announced by the state government on sale of meat. After hearing an appeal filed by the Jain organisation, a division bench comprising Justices Tirath Singh Thakur and Kurian Joseph, said that the court was not going to interfere with the Bombay High Court order.

The bench held HC has given extensive reasoning while staying the ban order and it will not interfere with it when the matter was yet to be finally heard by the High Court. Refusing to entertain the appeal, the division bench said that the compassion for living creatures does not have to be only on a few days but it should be for the entire year.

The Apex Court observed that such prohibitions or stay have to take into account about the sensibilities of people involved in the matter and it has to be done in the spirit of tolerance and accommodation. Noting that the state suddenly putting some restrictions on the citizens eating habits on meat is not correct, the Bombay High Court had on Monday stayed the ban sought to be imposed by the state government. The court clarified that the stay is only on the sale of meat on 17th September.
