The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has stressed the need to strengthen the Afghan government's role while coordinating more effective international civilian efforts. Addressing the UN Security Council, he said better coordination based on strong political willingness of donor countries and strong local effort is key to resolving the current situation. Meanwhile, the outgoing UN special envoy to Afghanistan, Kai Eide has called for peace and reconciliation between the Kabul government and Taliban. In his address to the UN Security Council, he said a peace and reconciliation process must be launched. He said if the insurgents agree to join a peace process, the move will significantly enhance the prospects of withdrawal of foreign troops.
