Ballia boat tragedy: death toll rises to 62?

<br/>In Uttar Pradesh, a named FIR against boatman has been lodged for criminal negligence at Haldi police station in connection with Ballia boat tragedy. Boat man is resident of Badilpur village and absconding after the incident.<br/><br/>Meanwhile with the recovery of 12 more bodies from Ganga River, the death toll in the tragedy has climbed to 62.<br/><br/>The Deputy Director General of Police Azamgarh Range Mr. Prakash D told AIR Lucknow correspondent that among the dead were 14 girls, 9 boys, 20 women and 19 men and all of them have been identified.<br/><br/>He said that search operation has been completed as all of the missing person’s body have been recovered from the river. He said that post-mortem of all bodies has been completed and last rituals of most of the deceased completed. He said that magisterial inquiry has begun.<br/><br/>The incident occurred on Monday morning when a boat carrying villagers, was proceeding from Ojhawalia ghat under Dubhar police station to attend a family function on the other side of the river and capsized in the main stream of the river.<br/><br/>The state Governor Me. BL Joshi, Chief Minister Mayawati and former chief minister Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav have expressed their grief over tragedy.<br/><br/>The State government had announced an ex-gratia of one lakh rupees each to the kin of those killed in the mishap and local administration has started distribution of financial assistance.<br/><br/>The district magistrate has also announced for providing financial assistance under National Family Benefit Scheme to the families suffered in the tragedy.
